There is yet another message-id these days. It is defined in the RFC's for handling IMAP mail. It's possible that Apple's mail offerings use that id which is a limited length number rather than a text string created in a way that avoids conflicts. IMAP accounts assign an id to each message as it is first seen and another IMAP server might assign another. I'm pretty sure that the IMAP id becomes part of the message and can be found by a client.
