Thanks for the comments. I changed the offending line ...

set value of text field 1 of window 1 to "tempFile.pdf" --***** ERROR HERE IN MT LION ********

to

set value of text field 1 of sheet 1 of window 1 to "tempFile.pdf" 

I no longer get the error, but I don't think the text is being written to the text field 1.

I'm now having problems getting the file to save correctly to:
home/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/

and there seems to be a problem with Mail responding to
writing this path to NSNavLastRootDirectory in Mail's preference file.
