O'Reilly Sendmail" The bat book p607 (1994)

The uid of the user using the -f option must match one of the names in the T configuration command. If there is no match sendmail quitely ignores the option and uses "the C language NULL"

"The -f switch is primarily used to support UUCP." Is also on the page.

a space after the -f or -F is optional.

The T configuration seems to be something that is set when sendmail is built or installed with a config startup file. It might be fun to see how Apple handles that in these days of more spam than truth..

I once thought you could prepare a message complete with the headers and email it off with sendmail, but I may be confusing it with some perl scripts that just go directly to an SMTP server and handle it all.
