Manoah's solution looks interesting. I'll have to try it out when I have more time. :)
Open the Terminal's Applescript dictionary in the Applescript Editor.
Search for "image", "pic", "back".
You won't find anything in there for "background image".
That's always the place to start when you want to script an application. Scope out the terminology.
