Making a menubar status item

I would like to create a widget that will display the results of a periodic SOAP call in a status item on the menu bar.

I know how to do the SOAP call from AppleScript (or Perl or Ruby or ...).  Is there an easy way to get the menubar item from such a language?

I mean, I can create an NSStatusItem in Objective-C, and it's probably not too hard to do the SOAP stuff there, too, but if there's an easier way, especially one that can use my existing AS code, that would be convenient.
