You could probably save a lot of time by not posting pointless polemics
to mailing lists. ;)
AppleScript was designed to be "English-like" (US-English-like, at any
rate) and, originally, a few other-likes. It was aimed at Mac owners who
may not necessarily have programming experience but who want to put
together automation sequences for things they do regularly on their
computers. (It predates Automator by several years.) For these purposes,
'set x to 1' ticks all the boxes. 'x = 1' ticks none of them.
It shouldn't be beyond those gifted with the power of scripting to write
scripts which expand their preferred forms of terseness to actual
AppleScript code, leaving them free to worry about other things.
