Hey Nigel,
That's not very nice at all, but get this:
tell date "Thursday, December 31, 1846 23:59:59" to ¬
return its {weekday, day, month, year, hours, minutes, seconds, date string}
--> 1st run in Script Debugger
--> {Friday, 1, January, 1847, 0, 1, 14, "Thursday 31 December 1846"}
--> 2nd run in Applescript Editor
--> {Thursday, 31, December, 1846, 23, 50, 35, "Thursday, December 31, 1846"}
--> Subsequent runs in either are identical to the 2nd item.
I just checked in Smile, and it reports the same results you got.
I'll try again the next time I reboot if I remember.

No anomaly on this one. I get the same.
