Yes, they fixed a lot of things in 2008, which involved some changes.
The only downside is hyperlinks are still not preserved when Word exports to PDF (unlike Pages which preserves hyperlinks when exporting to PDF).
I think that's consistent with saving to PDF in the UI, if that hasn't improved. (And I believe that's because it uses the underlying "Print to PDF" of the Mac OS. Interesting that they now implement it in Pages. Presumably Word hyperlinks are implemented in a way not understood by the Mac OS.) From what I dimly recollect from a long time ago, when I wanted to preserve hyperlinks and a few other things in a major Word document I was writing, I had to save to PDF in Word Windows in Parallels, then drag it back to the Mac side.
