Thank you, Yvan and Nigel.  Indeed, replacing

property posixHome : POSIX path of (path to home folder)

with

set posixHome to POSIX path of (path to home folder)

solved the problem.

You see, I’d always thought that “property” was just another way of writing “set…to”, because they seem to work the same.  Not so.  Lesson learned!
