savedsearch files

I thought I had a suggestion for Yvan KOENIG about "Strings used by Spotlight".
I found that my suggestion is no longer valid … hence this question.
A .savedsearch file is a .plist file, but with the ".plist" extension replaced with ".savedsearch".
It is NOT a folder. (Don't be fooled by the icon!)
Looking at the contents of a savedsearch file should be (was) easy.
Simply replace the .savedsearch extension with .plist, then open the file with Property List Editor or Xcode.
I've done this in the past and have discovered interesting content in these files.
I am now using Lion (10.7.5) and I have just discovered that:
1. The Finder will no longer allow changing the .savedsearch extension.
2. Xcode will not open a .savedsearch file. (Actually, it will open it, but doesn't show any content.)
3. TextEdit will open a .savedsearch file, but only shows the content in xml format.
It shows the header of a .savedsearch file as:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
Is there any way around the Finder's prohibition to changing the .savedsearch extension?
(I haven't yet tried reading or writing a .savedsearch file using AppleScript.
I need a way of reading these files in Xcode's dictionary format, first.)
