Nigel and Shane - thanks for the input.  :)

I've been mostly off-the-air fighting with Mavericks' Mail.

The install fried all my smart mailboxes and caused other mayhem.

I had to kill all my mail-data, reimport messages, and reconstitute Smart Mailboxes and Rules - then I discovered mass duplicates in hundreds of mailboxes.

Cleaning it up has taken a lot of time and effort, but I'm finally finished (hopefully).
