Hey James,
I use Applescript every day to combine the functionality of many apps, although my usage is personal rather than production (most of the time).
Apple has improved and damaged Mail's scriptablity in 10.9, but I don't have any huge things to complain about otherwise.
The only real answer for you is to build a test system and test it I'm afraid.
