Its really funny to read that localhost is dropped to reduce memory use when the system eat huge chunks of it for obscure reasons.

Well there are a few issues there. First, I suspect it's a reference to RAM, not disk space. Second, it's quite possibly been done more for the sake of iOS than OS X. And third, I suspect the excuse of memory is simplifying things -- I wouldn't be surprised if there were more to it.

I was not referring to disk space. My example citing iconServices was clearly speaking of the RAM used. This service is the process using the larger block on my machine.

On my machine, 18 minutes after switching ON my iMac, iconServices process is already using 383.8 Mbytes of Ram.
When I look in the Console, I may see that it grabbed thru the Net descriptions of icons which as far as I know are supposed to be defined in resources files.

Here are the Console lines :

Those messages are not about downloading things. They look like they might be a problem drawing icons, but there's no indication that there's any network traffic involved.

In fact I can see some similar messages here, and in each case they are followed by a quicklookd message. So I suspect that it's a case of QuickLook wanting to draw an icon, and there being a problem of some sort, perhaps in one particular icon size. The quicklookd messages suggests the problem is with the 16 x 16 image.

The quicklookd messages are :

As you may see, the grabbed size is not specifically 16 and if it's not one of the Apple servers, which is the server involved ?
