I suspect it will beak one day, but there's no alternative at this stage. The notes in the Overview section of EKEventStore are confusing, to say the least.

I wonder if what you're seeing is related to the need to get approval for access to the Calendar database. For some reason calling this stuff from ASObjC doesn't bring up the authorization dialog, as it does if you 'tell application "Reminders"'.
