Perhaps you could create a new empty folder and populate it with aliases to the disks you want to focus on now. The disks would all still be visible on the desktop, but the folder would give the focused view you seem to want. 

Or create aliases on the desktop, and set the Finder preferences to not show disks on the desktop.
