It just means acquiring privileges to do something you don't normally have the right to do. I don't know how Apple does it in do shell script, but I suspect these days the whole thing makes the security types cringe, if not shudder violently.

Well if you want your app to run scripts, you're better off using NSAppleScript/OSAScript/NSUserAppleScriptTask or one of the Carbon APIs. That way your app will be the default target, just as AppleScript Editor is the default target when you run scripts there.
