It doesn't seem to be affecting the utility of their machines. Even in my own case, I switched to the mac in 2004, but never picked up AppleScript till 2011. Didn't stop me from using my mac very productively before that.

Not really.
So how do I use Applescript…
My department used to be responsible for remedial level Math courses, the 2 courses final were made up of questions randomly selected from each “section” of Master files which contain thousands of questions.
It was a 1 day chore before I came in. The master files are in Word, with equations made be Equation Editor (therefore pictures) and Latex. It takes me, after I created a script, literally less than a minute to do all the 14 different versions (7 of each). Word takes longer.
I keep a (Numbers) spreadsheet with all my classes information, attendance, homework, quizzes, exams and final grade. These spreadsheets are created in seconds with AppleScript.
Once I have those, attendance is taken using AppleScript (one reason my officemate wanted to buy a Mac) and when done in the classroom, my students get a kick out of it. Grades are entered using AppleScript.
From these spreadsheets a webpage is created, for each of my student, with all their information.
The background color of their webpage is based on their grade (F lighter, A darker). They don’t know that.
These files are uploaded using AppleScript.
I create my exams in Latex, then from one version I made many by scrambling the exams AppleScripting TexShop.
Finally, I have to enter in Banner some information, either current grade, attendance but also student participation, homework activity etc. It was a miserable pain in the neck to do it. Now It is done in one second, I just have to review the result (problems with Banner, not AS). AppleScript again.
These are just some of the things that I use AS for.
I have made some stuff for my wife (using Smile, which I also use to create animations for classes I teach, among other stuff) and created other apps that I use constantly.
I am primarily a Mac user because of AppleScript.
