Just some thoughts I went through on this:

One option I tried and gave up on was GUI scripting the Dock separator, which would at least avoid opening up Sys Prefs. However, it seems to be identified by a postion integer, so that's going to vary from time to time. Accessibility Inspector threw up an action called AXPerformShowMenu but I couldn't find a way to trigger it.

A second option I wondered about was the dock preferences screen edge property. The dictionary doesn't indicate whether its settable or r/o, but as far as I could tell it was the latter.
