Ah, right. Thanks for the tip. Yeah, I see a few methods in there that look relevant, but you're right I'm not particularly interested in getting involved with that. Looks like too much of a time sink for me and my present interests / skill set.

I don't believe it either. Robert's MightyMonitor widget returns the same as ioreg commands, so it's either using the same calls or confirming that System Prefs is over reporting the keyboard battery status (something I've seen reported by users elsewhere anyway).
Looks like I'll have to go with using ioreg, but it is unfortunate that this is going to conflict with what the user sees reported by OSX. Guess I'll file a bug report for that.
