I timed it in bash (too lazy to try to figure out how in AS)

both methods take just miiliseconds to complete over a gigabit network.

The first method takes 1:15 minutes to complete remotely, the second method takes 48 seconds.

So I guess the first method is the way to go, because the second one would be repeated for each file so would add up to way more.
