If you want to time sections of a script, you can do it by putting this at the start:

use framework "Foundation"
set theNSDate to current application's NSDate's |date|()

Then at any point include this:

current application's NSLog("this point %f", -(theNSDate's timeIntervalSinceNow()))

The times will then appear in Console.app., and it works when run as an applet.

But I’m not sure how I could speed this up:

First step is to try to isolate exactly where the time is being spent.
