Yvan, it took two re-boots, but Numbers no longer retains the last opened window when run. Thanks

That sounds like the autosave feature first introduced in Lion. If you've upgraded recently it may be that you had it turned off but the upgrade has reset the default.
Go to System Preferences > General and check the box called "Close windows when quitting an app".
