I encountered this case with iWork applications.
On some machines - including mine - two versions are available : Numbers v2.3 and Numbers v3.5.3 because some features of the old app aren't available in the new one.

I was forced to call the apps by their pathname and so the script is dedicated to a given machine.
I can't guess where users may have really store their apps.
My practice taught me that it's also important to run only one application at a time.
