I don't think we've heard from Luther on this for a while -- regulars may recall the posts began a couple of years ago with 10.8, and continued through the dot-releases of 10.8 and 10.9. At one stage he posted:

So I thought I'd mention that here, running 10.10.2, the launch command is working as documented. I only discovered this accidentally, so I don't know what version the change was made in -- it's not listed in any of the release notes.

So maybe Luther's bug reports weren't a waste of time after all.
