I forgot to ask, if “info for” is deprecated, then what is the recommended way to get info, such as: is this object a folder, a file, an alias, a media file, etc? 

In the Standard Additions terminology dictionary, the entry for "info for" says:

This command is deprecated; use ‘tell application "System Events" to get the properties of …’.

I always recommend reading the dictionary regarding any terms being discussed.
