Malcolm;
I believe Shane’s answer solved your problem and is an excellent solution.
However, if I may, I can suggest Smile.
Smile opens a pict file and it can save it as a jpg.
Smile Smile is scriptable back and forth, this is another possibility.
It obviously requires you to download Smile if you don’t have it.
But there you go, another solution.
I used Smile to convert the images. I didn't do much scripting. I simply
had a drag-n-drop app that took a list of files, generated a new file
name using .jpg instead of .pct and had Smile "save as "JPEG"".
After running the script I noticed that a large number of the .pct files
didn't have a corresponding .jpg file beside it. I tried to open and
save one of the skipped files to see if errors were generated but it
converted successfully. So, I ran the process again, on the .pct files
that were not converted. Again, the majority of the files were converted
but some were skipped. It took six or seven runs to get all the files
converted. On the last run there were only two files to convert and one
was skipped!
This was a one-off job, so I'm not going to try to find and fix the
issue. It was quicker to run the process several times than to try to
debug the problem.
thanks to everyone who made suggestions,
Malcolm
