I fear it looks more useful than it really is. Chris Stone and I did some checking off-list, and I came to the conclusion that what is stored for com.apple.recentitems is not what appears in the recent items menu. I've had a look at what it contains here, and some of it is literally from many years ago.

The files and applications listed in the Recent Items menus may be generated as needed using Spotlight, or stored somewhere else.
