John,
I’d use Adobe Illustrator.
Illustrator allows you to create symbols like CAD or diagram tools so you
can work with complex custom objects as simple named objects like ‘HM
Aeron Chair 2016’.
If your Illustrator objects and your database objects have the same name
things are going to start clicking for you.
Illustrator also can operate at ultra-high precision in almost any
measurement unit, which is good for floor plans. There is a wonderful CAD
plug-in for it called CADTools which my wife, an interior designer, uses
for plans and elevations sometimes. That’s not scriptable, but the point
is that Illustrator can be used to create plans at the highest level of
quality.
Illustrator has a very scriptable, highly logical object model. I’ve been
automating Illustrator for 17 years and it’s never disappointed. It’s
also very well documented - Adobe publishes its own AppleScripting
Illustrator books you can download for free to help you get started.
Lots of other reasons to use Illustrator.
Good luck.
