I guess its a classic case of “YMMV”, then. I tried it on three macs:
On the first one (2009 MBP, 125GB partition, 65% full, 7200RPM Seagate Momentus platter, 6GB RAM), I ran the bash command in Terminal first, that was instantaneous. Got the same speed when I wrapped it in a do shell script.
I just tried the do shell script version on the others:
On my 2014 iMac (1TB Fusion, 12% full, 24GB RAM) got ~6 seconds on both the first and second run.
On my 3rd mac (almost identical twin to the other 2009 MBP except its got a faster 125GB OWC SSD disk, 6GB RAM) < 5 seconds on the first run, and about < 2 seconds on the second run.
Curious that both my half-knackered 6-yr old MBPs are faster than my supposedly blazing-fast iMac. :(
I guess there’s other factors at play, but not sure what those would be.
