Robert,
It may be helpful for you to know that I use Smile lots, and I have not seen happen on my machine (MacBook Pro running 10.11.3.)
Could you maybe post a bit of the gibberish? Someone might recognize it. And perhaps more detail on which apps, which commands you use to create the file and open it?
