No discernible difference here, either. 

Quick-dirty-not-very-scientific test, but using the esc key to cancel the script as soon as I see the choose folder dialog appear, I can get either of them to complete within 1 second:

log (current date)'s seconds
try
tell application (path to frontmost application as text)
choose folder
end tell
end try
log (current date)'s seconds


EVENTS:
tell current application
current date
(*15*)
path to frontmost application as text
end tell
tell application "Script Editor"
choose folder
end tell
tell current application
current date
(*15*)
end tell
