I've been writing AppleScript at pretty high level for over 20 years now and have spent endless hours fighting with its various foibles (both root-language and app-specific).
I learned a long time ago to never spend more than an hour or two wrestling with something without asking about it here and/or on MacScripter.net. Very frequently someone already knows the answer to a problem or at least has a clue or two to its solution.
I wish Apple had a good search engine for their various lists. They used to have a fairly decent one, but it's been defunct for years now.
Google's site-search works but doesn't produce very good (or comprehensive) results.
