Let me see if I can shamelessly juggle a few hats here: as the resident ASObjC booster, as developer of ASObjC Explorer, and as a developer involved in Script Debugger 6.

First, let me say that there are some great things in Script Debugger 6 that don't involve ASObjC. I personally think code folding is nothing short of magic. But wearing my ASObjC booster hat, I have to say it's a particularly great day.

One of the big problems for a newcomer is that ASObjC results are opaque. What on earth does «class ocid» id «data optr00000000A0389E6D857F0000» mean?

The absence of a script editor that could deal with ASObjC is what lead me to write ASObjC Explorer, and it does a good job of what it sets out to do. But the process of using one editor for application scripting and another for ASObjC scripting is a distraction and complication for most people. It’s all AppleScript, and I have long argued it should all be do-able in one place.

Script Debugger 6 delivers: a single editor that handles both worlds well. Its ASObjC code completion will be familiar to users of ASObjC Explorer, but goes considerably further. It really does make writing ASObjC code a lot simpler. And the ability to step through scripts and explore Cocoa results, to the point of being able to explore the contents of collection classes, is a huge step forward for newcomers, as well as something that will delight old-timers. No more «class ocid».

Script Debugger 6 makes using ASObjC a much more pleasant and productive exercise. It’s a giant step forward.
