I have a script that converts HTML documentation to plain text, that can be easily searched, with the result opening in a web page with links to the original source. This allows for simple searches, or very complex searches (grep) of multiple files in multiple directories, giving the user the option to speify how to search and narrow the documents to be searched.
I stared it for AppleHelp files, but it could be adapted to any html files you want to search.
It’s still a work in progress.

The biggest advantage of having a single PDF document is the ability to search. I think Apple’s abandonment of PDF documentation of AppleScript and other technologies is a huge mistake. I sorely miss the ability to search a PDF document for terms I think are related to topics I am looking for when I can’t quite remember the topic and wouldn’t be able to find where it is if I did. Likewise for having an index with actual page numbers in it, preferably set up as links — can’t do that in HTML. It’s a serious problem and disappointment for me.
