Weirdly I hit a similar problem with Outlook - you can check if “Microsoft AU Daemon” is running and maybe quit it?

I've passed on instructions for disabling Word's template picker and auto-update as temporary workarounds, and I'm currently having a crack at using textutil and tidy to convert the .doc files into (really crappy) XHTML which I should be able to parse (albeit painfully) into consumable form, eliminating the need to go through Word at all. Frustrating that Word makes all this stuff so difficult, but I don't suppose Office got to be such a shameless monopoly by playing nicely with others. I think when I'm done I'll record some nice movies of the whole thing in action, at least then I'll have a solid fallback the next time <application name> decides to play silly buggers on us and ruin the day. Plus it looks really cool, of course. ;p
