With all due respect to has' passion, knowledge, and talent, the core message that I get from this is "If you build it, they will come". When dealing with a manager who is responsible for allocating resources to competing potential projects, that simply is not a compelling argument. A minimal Business Case has to be put forward answering the fundamental questions of:
- Who will buy it?
- Why will they buy it?
- How many of them are there?
- How much will they pay?
Preparation of such a Business Case would usually be the job of the Product Manager, not the end users. One can only conclude that Mr. Soghoian either did not put forward such a case or that it was not compelling.
My own strong suspicion is that Apple's current management has already made the strategic decision to let the Mac wither on the vine while milking the last bit of profit out of it with token upgrades – and instead, devoting all its resources to consumer toys. In such an environment, even a good Business Case for Mac Automation is liable to fall on deaf ears.
