saving Mail messages as ?

What I'd like to do is save a Mail message to something in Finder that I can later open so that Mail considers that as a message and I can applescriptly reply to it...

I've noticed that creating an .eml file was only creating a "file" that generated a "window" once opened in Mail, but certainly not a "message"...
