Thank you all for your valuable comments. I've learned a bit about scripting in Yosemite/El Cap, mainly that there are quite numerous differences (sigh) to 10.6.8.
It seems that the problem encountered was very likely not a scripting one, but more linked to the fact having had to Finder entries in the "force quit" menu (so that I should have posted the whole thing to another list, I guess).
Anyhow, with a logout/login, Finder started again correctly and all scripts works again like a charm...Script Editor even pardons writing FINDER in upper case letters and gracefully converts it to lower case....
