It's quite possible it's a bit slower -- and it's also possible the particular shell tools you're using are slower because of increased security overhead involved in running them on more recent systems.
But I wonder if you're doing stuff that might be more quickly done without the overhead of launching a new process what I presume is thousands of times.
What does the script do?
