Your script works for me. I'll have to really look at yours and Chris's to see what I missed.
I'm puzzled. When I run the original script posted by Robert or the Chris's one, I get a name column whose real width is 390 pixelsa modification date column whose real width is 151 pixels a size column whose real width is 111 pixels.
Even more puzzling, in both cases I added these instructions : tell its list view options log (get width of column id name column) log (get width of column id modification date column) log (get width of column id size column) end tell and got : get width of column id name column of list view options of window 1 (*900*) (or 500 with Chris's one) get width of column id modification date column of list view options of window 1 (*141*) get width of column id size column of list view options of window 1 (*97*)
