rummage around the documentation for -stringByFoldingWithOptions:locale: and the ICU project's normalization library (which IIRC is what the ObjC method wraps) and you'll probably find something appropriate.
Such as? NSDiacriticInsensitiveSearch doesn't work:
Ah no, my mistaske: I got stringByFolding... muddled up with NSString's
stringByApplyingTransform:. Look into the latter: the ICU docs have a
great long list of available transformers, at least some of which are
included in macOS.
(It's nearly a year since I wrote that library; and this has been a
*very* tiring week. Automation Stories? You have no idea...)

BTW, I really hope y'all have filed your feature requests asking Apple
to adopt it for 10.13. Cos 10.13'll be the last chance to head Apple off
at the pass before they officially write off Automation as a Failed
Product (which it is, but not for technical reasons), and go with
OLE-style App Extensions as the future for inter-App integration. If
not, it's not too late to do it now:

attention, more chance of action.
