That's quite amazing. I get the same number of variables regardless of whether I select everything, or just text objects, or whether I deactivate clipping masks or not. Which was not the case with the original script.
The process is a bit slow (may be related to the machine etc.) but I get no crash so that's a huge improvement.
I can also run the script from Script Editor or from Illustrator and if I add a selectobjectsonactiveartboard in the main command block I don't even have to select anything myself...
Regarding performance itself, I tried the script after ungrouping all the objects to avoid long loops in the script but there does not seem to be a huge difference in processing time between objects being grouped or not, which is weird. The end result is about 560 variables and it takes 5 good minutes to get there...
