I guess it's largely a philosophical issue. In theory, the Preferences folder
is where the defaults system backs up its values, and Apple could decide
tomorrow to move it -- as it does with sandboxed apps -- or could do something
like restrict access to other than defaults. In practice, that seems unlikely,
but who knows. But given there's another choice that's explicitly designed for
an app's free use, it doesn't seem any hardship to use it instead.
