What is your purpose?
(1) There is another (more easy) way
You can control sound volume or WiFi connection by AppleScript itself. There is
no need to change sound volume with controlling menu extra.
(2) Scriptable Menu Extra apps
Some menu extra apps has AppleScript scriptability such as “AnyBar” or
“AirServer”.

(3) GUI Scripting issue
You can control Apple genuine menu extras via “SystemUIServer”.
