I think that depends. Basically, just try it.

Get the reference number from wherever you get it and try this:

  12345 as alias

Or

  Tell application "Finder"
      12345 as alias
  End tell

In AppleScript the "open file" command returns a reference number. I don't
know if that's the same number you're referring to.
