What other practical use cases are there for System Events scripting? Would you
have a simple example?
As others have said, explore the dictionary.
System Events exists only for Mac Automation (AppleScript and other OSA
Languages and Automator). GUI scripting is only a part of it.
It has nearly as many (if not more) window, file disk and directory commands as
the finder
It can manipulate image, audio and movie files
It can manipulate QuickTime settings
It can work with CDs and DVDs
It can manipulate the dock
It allows plist access
It offers XML commands
It provides progress indicators
It provides process information (running apps)
Plus you can get and set various preferences.
I'd also suggest ckecking out dictionaries for Image Events and Database Events.
These are the unsung heroes of AppleScript.
