Hi,
Brian, I’ve been reading your questions (sometime heated rants) for years.
You’ve been successful in putting complex handwoven things in certain order in
such a way that they work for you at least somewhat. However I feel that you
haven’t been trying to find the best or the most efficient or performant way of
doing things and have sometimes put the blame on the runtime, functions,
implementation and more. You were looking for one way to accomplish goals and
now you seem to not be satisfied with performance or efficiency. I will suggest
something totally outrageous now that you have a working app - a complete
rewrite in native code (Swift) with carefully laid out requirements and in a
way that is efficient and performant. For example - instead of AppleScripting
to Mail you could have accessed the underlying emlx files and got the
attachments from there directly or even interacted with the mailbox on the
server. Also, I would wish that you find time to really get to know the
language (Swift), foundation and frameworks, not just thru working example code
but also in its abstracts so you could also answer the “why” and the “how”.
Swift developer community is strong and vibrant but don't expect someone else
to write code for you. Alternatively you could just document every aspect of
your app and outsource its development. Since time is money, this may be equal
in cost or cheaper for you.
I absolutely do not share Phil’s view in Swift apps being underperformant, more
prone to crashing, language itself being made for iOS devices as well as being
less or worse than Objective-C. It is in fact quite the contrary, especially
from the developer’s view.
Kindest regards,
Boris Herman
