You need to apply character style “[None]” first.

Clearing overrides in a paragraph style doesn’t clear character styles within
it. The item you are seeing in the contextual menu is really a combination of
two functions.

To see the UI equivalent of what your script is doing as is, go to the
Paragraph Style flyout menu and choose Clear Overrides. That doesn’t override a
character style.

the paragraph style.
