Removed these two files from ~/Library/Preferences and the problem went away. I
didn’t try any further to determine a precise cause. Gee whiz, wanting plain
text to render in red on compiling has cost me a lot of wasted time over the
years. It’s been just intermittent enough to keep me from suspecting
immediately. Guess it’s time to and stop swimming up stream and settle for
default gray.
