I don't remember getting such odd behavior.

Tested again with items stored in different locations.
The first one with standard rights while the second has special rights defined
by the operating system.

tell application "Finder"

        reveal file "Macintosh HD:Users:Important:pour
ebay:_X29369ƒ:##29371.jpg"

        reveal file "SSD 500:System:Library:CoreServices:DiskImageMounter.app:"
end tell
